Graeme and Amanda

As I started writing about my my Swing Dancing Story Down Under Graeme and Amanda were a little far for me to interview in person. Not a problem nowadays though. They just filled in the questionnaire for me on-line J! I’m happy that way we don’t miss out on what they have to say. Enjoy!

A favorite tune Favourite tune?
Too many to mention! “Ain’t Misbehavin”,
“ Dinah” and “All of me” are absolute classics but my fave
version of each would be Kid Ory Meets Red Allen – Ain’t
Misbehavin’. Preservations Hall's version of “ inah”.
Gentlemen and Gangsters version of “All of me”...LOVE
THEM!

One dancing experience you’ll never forget:

When I first started taking lessons, I really felt so self-conscious and was too scared to try the social dance (which happened after class) for about 6 months maybe even longer.

I remember the first time I went to a social and someone started to walk over to me, I was so scared they were going to ask me to dance, that I ran out of the room and didn't go back for another couple of weeks...

I was such a scary cat! Dancing for me was (and sometimes still is) way more frightening than other things I've done in my life, like diving with sharks, bungee jump and sky diving...don't know why, it just is! At the beginning this was why I danced, for the feeling of being out of my comfort zone and knowing that one day I would overcome this.

What makes your class a good class to come to?
My classes are good because I understand how nervous some people can be about dancing so I try to make people laugh and feel comfortable in class.

I honestly believe swing dancing is for everyone no matter what your ability, as long as you love the music, the dancing will come and I am really encouraging to everyone in class... I think this attitude is the general attitude of dancers in Brighton, we have such a great community here,
feel very lucky :-).

‘Sweet Lorraine’ - Teddy Wilson

One dancing experience you’ll never forget:
Before I started dancing lindy hop, my sister and I booked onto the first London Swing Festival because it looked like fun. We both had an amazing time and it gave us a new common interest.
It has meant that we still hang out regularly as we get to catch up at all the lindy hop events we go to. Without lindy hop I wouldn't get to see my sister as much, so I'm really thankful that we both love this dance.

What makes your class a good class to come to?
I think people come to classes because it's so much fun to meet people every week, have a laugh, and learn a few dance moves. Swing music is great to dance to and people are always surprised about how quickly they can learn the dance.
